Virtual Postcards
In the fall I wanted to give my 7th grade French students a brief introduction to the regional geography and culture(s) of France. Each student was assigned a specific region of the country. The first task was to find information on important landmarks, cities, physical features, and food specialties of that region. I recommended the following sites (among others) as sources: http://www.francethisway.com/regions/auvergne.phphttp://us.franceguide.com/destinations I found Smilebox.com and liked the fact that it offered an easy way to create 'virtual postcards,' using pictures and original text. The built-in limitations on the number of pictures and the space for text also forced students to really be selective about what they chose to include. Mrs. Reiber gave my class an excellent tutorial on locating, citing, and saving digital images. After students had imported their pictures, they wrote notes, imagining they were tourists sending home postcards from their travels. They were asked to incorporate factual information, while keeping a natural voice. I asked them to use the 'Step by Step' Postcard design. They e-mailed me a copy of their finished postcards and later presented their work to the class. Most students enjoyed working on this and I was happy with the results.

Dear Madame Linville,
I'm in the beautiful region of Languedoc-Rousslin, in the city of Beziers. I had an exquisite meal of cassoulet a specialty to the region, Peladron, confit de canard, and clafoutis (A pudding made of egg batter). It was delicious. After my meal I visited the St. Nazaire Cathedral and Le Pont Vieux which is an old bridge. Tomorrow I plan to drive to the country side and visit the winery. I'm having a great time here and Beziers and I wish you could be here.

Dear Mom,
I'm having a great time in Normandy! Today we went to the amazing Mont Saint Michel. Then we walked along the sandy Normandy landing beaches of World War II. After that we drove on the Pont de Normandy! What a view! Finally we looked around the Garden of Giverny. It was gorgeous! Later in my trip I hope to try Boudin Noir aux Pommes and a special type of cheese called Chevre La Purcelle. And after my meal I really look forward to trying the specialty Normandy apple tart. I'm having tons of fun! I wish you were here!
